Despite many people’s claims to the contrary, it appears that one in three Flemish people celebrates Valentine’s Day. For about 40% of couples, this romantic special day has turned into a real family celebration. Of course, Valentine’s Day wouldn’t be complete without a gift: every year, we are spending more and more, with an average of 60 euros now being spent on our Valentines. Men spend more than women. And about 30% of shoppers buys an online Valentine’s Day gift. The age group that spends the most on Valentine’s Day is the millennials (people born between 1980 and 2000).

Dinner at a restaurant is also incredibly popular: just over 30% of loved-up couples goes out to dinner and no fewer than 19% of all Belgian restaurants even open their doors especially on Valentine’s Day if this day happens to fall on their regular closing day. A good 20% plans a romantic outing (such as a night out at the theatre or a day of wellness) and about 15% books an overnight stay at a hotel.

Flowers, too, continue to be a firm favourite, with an impressive 40% of people buying roses.
