It originated from a Japanese marketing campaign in the 1960s, when a pedometer was branded as the “manpo-kei” — literally “10,000-steps meter.” It sounded good and caught on quickly.
However, recent research tells a different story. Studies, including one published in JAMA Internal Medicine, show that as few as 7,000 steps per day are already enough to significantly reduce the risk of early death. Walking more is still beneficial, but the added gains decrease after a point — and there’s no magic number at 10,000.
So what does this mean for you?
If 10,000 steps feels out of reach on a busy day, don’t worry: 7,000 steps already put you on the path to better health. And when the weather’s bad or it’s too dark outside, you don’t have to skip your routine. At our gym, you can easily reach your step goal on the treadmill — dry, comfortable, and with extra motivation. Our treadmills are equipped with TV and YouTube, so your favorite show or playlist can keep you company while you walk.

7,000 steps a day is a realistic and healthy goal. Whether you walk outdoors or get your steps in with us: every step counts. Stop by and see how simple (and fun) it can be to take care of yourself — rain or shine.
