Treat your Valentine to a relaxing massage on 14 February. We’ll tell you what techniques to focus on to create a truly indulgent experience!
Set the mood
Make sure the room is comfortably warm, dim the lights, and put on some relaxing music. Really try to be present in the moment; take a few deep breaths to help you relax before you start.
Rub your hands together to warm them up, then choose a massage oil you both enjoy. Lavender, jasmine, patchouli, and ylang ylang are considered relaxing scents. Warm the oil before you start by placing the bottle in a bowl of hot water, making sure to keep it within reach during the massage.
Basic techniques
Start with the back and then move on to the legs, arms, and head. A hand and foot massage can also be relaxing, but make sure to use the right amount of pressure on the feet; if your touch is too light, it may tickle.
Use the flat of your hand to make long, slow motions across the entire back, avoiding areas where the bones are close to the surface, such as the shoulder blades. Then, place your hands on either side of the spine and massage in small, circular motions using gentle pressure. You can also use your forearms to make slow, sweeping strokes. Never apply pressure directly to the spine, as this is uncomfortable. Next, make small circles with your thumbs, applying gentle pressure as you go.
Breaking contact feels unpleasant, so try to maintain skin-on-skin contact throughout the massage. Let your hands glide from one area to another, repeating the movements several times. Pay attention to your pace and speed – you don’t want to go too fast.
