Ever taken part in an Aufguss session? It’s a sauna ritual during which water is poured on the sauna stones and the temperature is raised by flapping a towel. A unique experience.

According to Jonathan, who manages our wellness programme and Aufguss masters, an Aufguss session in the winter is absolutely wonderful! ‘You just have to try it. The interplay of hot and cold is a lot easier because when you step into the cold air outside, straight from the hot sauna, you cool down very naturally. It gives your immunity a real boost and on top of this, an Aufguss session is a little like a mini-holiday!’

An Aufguss session is not only the ultimate relaxation moment, it has real physical benefits too! The increase in temperature causes your body to sweat, allowing for the faster removal of waste products. In addition, your body also produces antibodies (like when you have the flu), which reduces your risk of catching a cold.

We asked Jonathan what his favourite wellness experiences are in the winter. ‘I love an Aufguss session in the Kelo sauna at Thermae Grimbergen. It’s a really big sauna in which you get very hot and where you can put on a real show. What’s more, it has a fantastic music and video system that enables us to create truly special Aufguss experiences. I also really enjoy a scrubbing session in the steam bath in the winter. We use eucalyptus and mint aromas. Eucalyptus has anti-inflammatory properties and gives your immunity a boost, plus it helps clear your sinuses. Perfect to prevent catching a cold, in other words. Mint essential oil also clears blocked sinuses and helps open up airways and reduce phlegm.’
