Smell is directly connected to the limbic system, the part of our brain where emotions and memories are stored. Our Aufguss masters keep this in mind when choosing the aromas they use to get the desired effect in their experiences!

So, a certain scent not only triggers a feeling, it can also affect your mood. Think of the warm aroma of eucalyptus in the sauna that helps you relax or the fresh aroma of mint that makes you feel alert. At Thermae Boetfort, we consciously choose those aromas that have a calming effect or instead energise you, depending on the experience. Every day, you can take part in a variety of Aufguss, scrubbing and relaxation sessions for free at our thermal baths. 

What is Aufguss? 

During an Aufguss session, the Aufguss master pours water infused with essential oils on the stones or places an ice ball with essential oils on them. This disperses a wonderful aroma and creates a sharp rise in temperature in the cabin at the same time! 

The Aufguss master then flaps a towel or a fan, wafting bursts of hot air over your body, which gives you a real adrenaline kick. A unique experience that is incredibly popular with ardent sauna fans. 

What aromas do we use? 

Our Aufguss masters have a wide variety of aromas at their disposal. They pick specific aromas they want to include in their sessions, making every session different. For instance, they may use eucalyptus, mint, palmarosa or lavender, but also a spicy aroma like ginger, or warm, woodsy ones like sandalwood, cedar or spruce. 

Citrus fruit aromas like mandarin, blood orange and grapefruit are, of course, also part of the aroma palette. And cinnamon and coconut are popular choices at our centre too.
