Sun exposure is believed to be the cause of 80% of visible skin ageing, including fine lines and age spots (also known as liver spots). So, applying sunscreen is a form of preventive protection. UV rays break down collagen and elastin, making your skin lose it elasticity and firmness. What’s more, sunlight stimulates melatonin production in your skin, resulting in age spots, among other things.
Also, it is important to regularly reapply sunscreen when spending long periods of time in the sun, sunbathing, for instance. You should always avoid getting sunburned because this damages your skin cells.
Plenty of reasons, in other words, to wear sunscreen consistently. But what is the best product to use? Pick a product that protects you from both UVA and UVB rays. Go for a waterproof product if you are spending a day on the beach or when exercising outdoors. Choose a formula that also hydrates your skin if you have dry skin or use a light product if you have oily skin.
How much sunscreen should you apply? The British Skin Foundation advises using half a teaspoon on your face and neck. Also, don’t forget your ears and eyes.
When should you apply your sunscreen? Right before heading outside and remember to reapply it every two hours on sunny days. Been exercising or had a swim? Put some sunscreen on straightaway!
