Going to the sauna is not only incredibly relaxing, it also does wonders for your health. The interplay between hot and cold temperatures boosts blood flow, eases muscle tension and helps you sleep better. In this blogpost, we tell you everything you need to know for the perfect sauna day.

What to bring to the sauna?

Whether you are having a private or a public sauna session, there are a few things you will always need!

  • Two big towels: You need one to sit on in the sauna to protect the wooden benches and another one to dry yourself with.
  • A bathrobe: If you want to go have something to drink or eat, you will definitely need a bathrobe because wearing a bathrobe is compulsory in our restaurant and bar. It is also comfortable to wear one when walking around the grounds in between sessions.
  • Spa slippers: These are compulsory in our public baths. Obviously, you don’t need to wear them in the actual saunas, but you do need to wear them in the corridors etc.
  • A book: While you are enjoying your me-time, why not read a book or magazine for some extra relaxation?

What to expect from a sauna day at Thermae?

First of all, you have the option to enjoy your wellness in our swimwear or nude area. They each have several saunas and wellness pools. You can, of course, spend time in both, provided you respect the dress code. In the nude area, you can enjoy wellness in the nude and in the swimwear area, in swimwear. For men, this consists of short, fitting swimming trunks, like Speedos. Women can wear a swimsuit or bikini.
We are open daily from 10:30 to 23:00 and on Fridays and Saturdays even till midnight. Use our facilities to the fullest and make sure that you have several hours to explore them to your heart’s content. You don’t have to do everything, of course, just what feels good to you. Our wellness programme alone is too extensive to work your way through in the time you have anyway. Have a good look at what is on offer and pick your favourites.
Our saunas are a safe environment to relax in, which is why smartphones and other devices are forbidden at our public baths. This is how we guarantee your privacy. We also ask all our guests to respect the silence, so everyone can enjoy a peaceful, relaxing experience at our wellness complex.
We have different saunas e.g. the traditional Finnish saunas, which are drier and hotter, but also infrared saunas which are generally less hot but the heat penetrates your muscles more deeply. A steam bath is another must-try, great for keeping your skin in top condition.

This is how to make the most of your sauna visit!

Start your sauna day with a shower. That way, you won’t smell bad when you are sweating in the sauna. This also prepares your body to the heat it will be exposed to. Make sure to dry yourself well before going into the sauna, to ensure an optimal sauna experience. After every sauna session and after every visit to the toilet, you will need to shower again.
Start with a sauna with a lower temperature, then gradually build your way up and then down again towards the end of the day. Don’t forget to drink enough water and cool down properly. Do this by going outside for a few minutes first and taking a few deep breaths in and out, followed by a cold shower and if you like, a dip in the plunge pool. Have a little break before starting your next sauna session.
By the way, did you know that it is less hot on the lower benches in the sauna than on the upper ones?
Do also check out our daily wellness programme, which is free to our guests. Every day, our Aufguss masters organise several unique wellness rituals like an Aufguss in the sauna, a scrubbing session in the steam bath or a relaxation session with Tibetan singing bowls. Our halotherapy session is also well-worth trying! Want to know more? Check the TV screens at our centres or ask our Aufguss masters!

To book or not to book?

There is no need to book when you are visiting us for just a sauna day. In fact, you can’t actually book this in advance anyway unless you are using a voucher from one of our partners, like a Bongo or Shedeals voucher, for instance. Do you have a voucher for our sauna complex? Make sure to carefully read the Terms & Conditions before your visit.
Would you like to combine a day of sauna and wellness with a relaxing massage or treatment or an overnight stay in our wellness hotel? If so, these do need to be booked in advance.
Prefer a private sauna over a public sauna session? You will have to book this yourself in advance online.
