At Thermae Grimbergen, we base our aroma choice on the time of day and the desired effect: calming or revitalising. Think of eucalyptus, which is deeply relaxing or mint, which wakes up your senses. How does this work? Smell is a stimulus that directly affects the emotional centre of our brain: the limbic system. This is where memories and feelings are processed, which is why a particular scent can instantly trigger a certain feeling.
What happens during an Aufguss session?
During this experience, the Aufguss master pours water infused with essential oils on the red-hot stones or places an aromatic ice ball on the sauna stove. This disperses the aroma in the cabin and causes a sharp rise in temperature. Bursts of hot air are then wafted over you, wonderful waves of heat washing over your skin which makes you feel relaxed and gives you a real adrenaline kick at the same time.
What aromas do our Aufguss masters use?
Our Aufguss masters have a wide palette of aromas available to them. Every Aufguss master blends his own mix, so every session is different. They may use fresh aromas like mint or eucalyptus, mild aromas like lavender or palmarosa, but also robust notes like ginger, sandalwood, cedar or pine. In contrast, fruity aromas like orange, grapefruit or mandarin add a lighter, summery touch. Warm and exotic aromas like coconut or spicy cinnamon are also regularly used.
