When it’s sunny, the cold plunge pool or natural swimming lake of Thermae Grimbergen are the perfect places to cool down. And, because it’s nice and warm outside, immersing yourself in the cold water is a lot less daunting!
What is the best way to cool down? Leave the sauna and put on your spa slippers (and maybe your bathrobe) and have a little stroll around the garden. Take a few deep breaths in and out. The heat in the sauna has opened up the alveoli of your lungs, making it easier to absorb the fresh oxygen afterwards. Once you have walked around for a few minutes, have a cold shower. Start with the parts of your body that are furthest away from your heart and work your way up to your heart. Only now are you ready to jump into the swimming lake or the cold plunge pool. And if you are feeling really brave, you could even immerse your head!
How long should you cool down for? The golden rule is that your cooldown should be as long as your sauna round. So, if you have spent fifteen minutes in the sauna, you should also cool down for fifteen minutes.
And after cooldown? Don’t hop into the sauna again straightaway – take a little breather. Swim for a bit, drift off in the Jacuzzi or just lie down on one of the sun loungers and have a little relax!
