An Aufguss session is so much more than pouring water on hot stones. It is a carefully crafted sauna ritual, where heat, scent, music and movement meet. A moment where you don’t have to do anything for a while.

At Thermae Grimbergen, you have several opportunities every day to take part in this wonderful experience. You can visit us seven days a week for sauna and wellness, both in swimwear and naked.

What is Aufguss?

A hot, scent-filled experience in the sauna. During an Aufguss session, the sauna master pours water infused with essential oils on hot sauna stones. This causes a sudden rise in temperature in the cabin. Using a towel or fan, the Aufguss master then spreads this hot air around the sauna.

Result? A more intense heat experience, your breathing slows and your senses awaken. An Aufguss session is both relaxing and invigorating at the same time.

How do sauna masters prepare a sauna ritual?

Our Aufguss masters prepare their sessions carefully. They pay a lot of attention to:

  • building up the heat,
  • the choice of scents,
  • the music,
  • the tools they use to wave or flap and
  • the atmosphere they want to create.

Our Aufguss masters coordinate everything beautifully to give you a deeply relaxing experience.

How many is too many Aufguss sessions?

Whether or not you take part in our Aufguss sessions is completely up to you. There is no obligation. One thing we notice is that some customers try to work their way through our entire wellness programme. Not something we recommend. Aufguss sessions can be intense. Our advice? Pick one to three sessions and keep it at that.

Also, during a session, listen carefully to your body. Are you getting too hot? Go sit on a lower bench or leave the sauna. The goal should always be relaxation, the experience should always be enjoyable. It is not about pushing your limits.
